Suspended Hope
Should You Go First

Suspended Hope
This is an odd place
getting older,
somewhat suspended
between one reality,
and the next.
I’m puzzled by the strangeness,
seeing spots where there
were no spots.
In my eyes, floating spots,
on my arms,
small brown, aging spots.
My thumbs don’t bend all the way
at the knuckle
like they used to,
and the past seems far away now—
like an old dream.
Tonight I’ll lay my head
upon a pillow in the dark,
and listen to Chopin’s soft melodies.
It will be as if he never died,
and I’ll hope that someone
far away from now
will be there,
softly listening to me.
