A study from the Phoenix Center suggests that using the Internet to maintain family and social relationships may reduce depression by up to 20% among senior citizens. The study examined survey answers from 7,000 retired Americans aged 55 or more, and excluded people still working or in nursing homes.
The study concluded that social use of the internet could lower rates of depression among seniors, probably by allowing people with decreasing mobility to maintain healthy relationships. The study notes that only 42% of seniors aged 65 or more use the Internet, and suggests that encouraging Internet usage and increasing broadband access among seniors might lower total medical costs for the treatment of depression.
