Artist’s Statement: The design of this piece is based on Mexican folk art and shrines. The heart, the center of the collage, represents God’s love—it looms over and surrounds the globe, which symbolizes every person, culture and country on earth. The crown above the heart reminds us of two things:
- God is the King and demands/deserves respect while offering us peace, and
- God is love.
The snake that surrounds the world is a symbol taken from Navajo culture, and it represents a guardian. Here it is a guardian from God protecting all His children. The silver rays shooting out from behind the heart represent God’s holiness. Silver, textured paper was used here to mimic the cut tin often seen in Mexican folk art. The piece is set against a sky of blue and yellow. The blue symbolizes God’s life-giving air (the Holy Spirit) and the yellow represents the hope and reward we have through Jesus.
