“Don’t waste your time on jealousy.
Sometimes you’ll be ahead, sometimes you’ll be behind.
The race is long and, in the end, it’s only with yourself.”
—Unknown wise person
Well, I’ve never jumped out of an airplane
I work out at least once a week
You’ll probably never see my life story on TV
I go in at 9 and I punch out at 5
And try to make the most of each day
If my life seems simple, well maybe
I like it that way.
‘Cause it’s dog eat dog in the old rat race
At least that’s what they say
You’ve gotta be slick, move quick, deal like the dickens
If you want to stay ahead of the game
And I’m sure there are plenty of perks at the top
When you get to be number one
But you still need someone in the middle
Playin’ on the second fiddle
And sometimes that’s twice the fun.
So, yes, I’m average,
Just a median kind of a gal
Oh sure, I’ve got enough brains to get along,
But I’ll probably never win a Nobel of any kind
I’m average, but that’s all right with me
Not fast or slow, not high or low
Just hangin’ ‘round middle C.
Well sure, I can spell “Albuquerque” right
And I can name all the Brady kids
I don’t know many lines from The Holy Grail
But I can sing almost any song Peter, Paul and Mary ever did
I’ve got the usual sense of rhythm when I tap my size 8 foot
And I can make up a rhyme if I have enough time
But then again sometimes I can’t.
Because I’m average
Just a median kind of a gal
Oh, sure, I can write funny little songs
But they’re never gonna be The William Tell Overture
I’m average, but that’s all right with me
Not fast or slow, not high or low
Just hangin’ ‘round middle C.
Well, you might think I’m a 2x4 short of a deck
Or that I’m just a lazy slob
How can anybody try to be as happy as heck
Without gobs and gobs of ambition?
But I’m just sayin’ that it’s okay to not always be the top
I’d rather have it like that than have a heart attack
‘Cause I drove myself ‘til I dropped . . . dead.
And if I’m average, it doesn’t mean I’m in a losing mode
It’s just that I can still have a lot of purpose in life
Without being on the cover of the Rolling Stone
I’m average, but somebody’s got to be
Between fast and slow, between high and low
And hangin’ ‘round middle C,
Between fast and slow, between high and low
And beltin’ out that middle.
