Beatitudes for Friends of the Terminally Ill
by Nancy A. Todd
Blessed are they who are sensitive to the family's emotional pain, as well as the emotional, physical and spiritual pain of the patient.
Blessed are they who give the hope for tomorrow and offer strength to struggle through the problems of today.
Blessed are they who bring caring and encouragement with visits, cards and phone calls.
Blessed are they who offer practical gifts—cooking a meal, helping with cleaning or yard work, shopping or taking care of a child.
Blessed are they who offer to stay with the patient so the family can take a break from the stress of illness to regain their perspective and renew their strength.
Blessed are they who show compassion with a gentle touch or silent presence, knowing that advice, clichés, platitudes and answers are not always necessary.
Blessed are they who are sensitive to the family's feelings and concerns, sharing their joys and sorrows and responding to their needs.
Blessed are they who are available to offer help or fill a request so the patient and family do not feel abandoned or isolated.
Blessed are they who can act naturally, as if nothing were wrong, not focusing on the illness but on the person who is ill and on being the friend they always have been.
Blessed are they who provide spiritual support and comfort with their prayers, giving hope that there will be a reunion in heaven with those who have gone before.
