Creatures One and All

by Kathy Kuehner

Have you ever thought about what it must be like to be a shelter dog? I’ve been working with shelter dogs for many years as a volunteer at our local Humane Society. The dogs arrive for many different reasons:

  • Some are lost and come in as strays.
  • Some have been abused or neglected and have come in as part of a rescue operation.
  • Some are surrendered because their owners can no longer care for them.
  • Some are brought in just because they are no longer wanted.

Many of the dogs arrive confused, fearful, sad, and sometimes angry and defensive. They don’t understand what is going on in their lives. Often times we humans experience the same type of thing. We find our worlds turned upside down, we are displaced from what we’ve known and those we love, and we are in a strange place facing an unknown future. We may also find ourselves feeling confused, fearful, sad, and angry.

Creatures One & All is a collection of stories about six very special shelter dogs:

  • A yellow Lab named Sweet Girl
  • A Terrier named Bear
  • Robin, a Lab/Hound mix
  • A Poodle named Checkers
  • Hotch, a breed of his very own
  • A little Beagle named Angel

Through their stories a number of biblical truths and principles are illustrated and explored involving issues of freedom, fear, comfort, trust, sin, salvation, joy, contentment, and eternity.

You can read the story of “Bear” from the book Creatures Great & All here: Bear’s Story

Bear was eventually reunited with his original owners and it was a very joyful reunion indeed.
