A White Lie Cake
Alice was summoned to bake a cake for the community bake sale. Alice decided to bake an angel food cake but when she took it from the oven, the center had dropped flat. She said, “Oh dear, there’s no time to bake another cake.” So she looked around the house for something to build up the center of the cake.
Alice found what she needed in the bathroom—a roll of toilet paper. Alice plunked the toilet paper into the cake and covered it with icing. The finished product looked beautiful! She rushed the cake to the community center.
Alice then gave her daughter some money with instructions to be at the sale the minute it opened. She was to immediately buy the cake and bring it home. When the daughter arrived at the sale, the attractive cake had already been sold. Alice was beside herself.
A few days later, Alice was invited to a friend’s home for an afternoon bridge tournament. After the tournament, an elegant lunch was served, topped off by a cake that looked disturbingly familiar. Before Alice could get to her feet to warn the hostess, one of the ladies exclaimed, “What a beautiful cake!”
“Thank you,” the hostess said. “I baked it myself.”
